Richard is a highly cited clinical scientist, internationally recognised for research that has shaped clinical guidelines and practice in cardiometabolic renal disease, digital health, and primary care.
He is Mercian Professor of Primary Care in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care, and Director of the Oxford Institute of Digital Health.
He previously served as Head of the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences (2011–24) and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (2020–25).
Before that, Richard was National Director of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research and Director of the NHS Quality and Outcomes Framework Review Panel. He has served on numerous national and international scientific and research funding boards and currently chairs the European Primary Care Cardiovascular Society.
